(1913) with Oakland Symphony Chorus |
Our April program
begins and ends with works by the always delightful Ravel. Originally written
for solo piano, Pavane pour une Infante défunte became so popular
in the salons of Paris that Ravel orchestrated it in 1910. This deceptively
simple piece follows the form of the Renaissance dance, the pavane.
Daphnis et Chloe, Suite No. 2 is extracted from the ballet
masterpiece commissioned by Diaghilev for the Ballet Russe. It was inspired by
the story of two young orphans raised by shepherds on a Greek island who fall
in love, become separated when Chloe is abducted by pirates, and are eventually
reunited.
German-born violinist Axel Strauss, now on the faculty at the
San Francisco Conservatory of Music, will shine in Beethoven's Violin Concerto,
one of the most technically demanding pieces in the violin repertory. Both
playful and majestic, this concerto is a showcase for a virtuoso performer.
Also on the program is the world premiere of a work for orchestra and
chorus by local composer Andrew Norman.
