Our April concert
explores two symphonies written in the key of G minor: Mozart's Symphony No.
25, often called "the little G Minor Symphony" and Symphony No. 2 in G Minor by
Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammer.
Mozart's Symphony No. 25 will be
familiar to many, in part, because it figured prominently in the film Amadeus.
The action of that film opens with Salieri's attempted suicide set against the
sharply edged throb of this work's opening passage and the explosive "rocket"
theme that follows it. Throughout the symphony, Mozart balances the distraught
opening tone with more cheerful episodes, playing these contrasting elements
off each other.
We'll conclude our series of second symphonies with
Wilhelm Stenhammar's highly romantic Symphony No. 2 in G Minor. Stenhammar's
works, though not performed frequently outside of Sweden, are very popular in
his native land. As The Sunday Times of London wrote: "What Sibelius is to
Finland, Nielsen to Denmark and Grieg to Norway, Wilhelm Stenhammar is to
Sweden. His Second Symphony counts as perhaps his finest - and certainly his
most recorded - work."
This concert will also showcase the winner of
this year's annual Young Artist Competition (to be held in May).
