As principal dancer of the Oakland Ballet for 18 years, Joy danced many lead roles including Myrtha in Giselle; the Other Woman in Jardin Aux Lilas; the Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow and Rose Queens, and Arabian Coffee in The Nutcracker; Zobeide in Scheherazade; the Glove Seller in Gaîté Parisienne; and the lead dancer in Nijinska's Bolero. Following her retirement in 1998, Gim has taught many ballet master classes for studios throughout the Bay Area, including Oakland Ballet Acadamy, Marin Peninsula Ballet, Lamorinda Ballet Center, Vallejo Ballet Conservatory, Shawl/Anderson Dance Center, and, most recently, Ballet Petit. In 2007 she re-joined Oakland Ballet Company as a regisseur.
Joral Schmalle, Dancer, Bolero D'Amore
Born and raised in
Northern California, Schmalle began his early training in Ukiah with his mother
and Nuria Lovett-King. At age eight he received a full scholarship to the San
Francisco Ballet School. He also studied at the School of American Ballet,
Ballet Celeste International, and American Conservatory Theatre. He joined
Oakland Ballet in 1983, was named Associate Artistic Director in 1997, and
served as Acting Artistic Director 1999-2000. He has appeared in numerous lead
and title roles with the Company, including Billy the Kid (Billy),
The Secret Garden (Archibald Craven), Romeo and Juliet (Romeo and
Tybalt), Giselle (Albrecht), The Green Table (Death),
Scheherazade (The Golden Slave), L'apres-midi d'un faune (the
Faun), Le Train bleu (Beau Gosse) Carmina Burana (principal
male), and Coppelia (Franz). In 1993 he was a finalist in the
prestigious New York International Ballet Competition .
The Golden Follies
Sisters and Oakland natives Susan Bostwick and Diane Tembey-Stawicki choreograph and direct The Golden Follies, dancers and singers aged 55 to 83. Founded 18 years ago, The Golden Follies perform a Las Vegas style revue throughout Northern California to music ranging from Broadway to the Great American Songbook to rock and roll .
