Our February concert
features classic works of enduring popularity by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky,
and provides a showcase for talented young artists in our community. The
concert opens with the Third Symphony of Mendelssohn, a charming piece inspired
by the sights and sounds of the Scottish people and countryside.
Tchaikovsky's rousing 1812 Overture, probably his best-known
work and now a staple of Fourth of July celebrations throughout the country, is
an ideal piece to perform with double orchestra. Musicians from Oakland East
Bay Symphony will be joined by the Oakland Youth Orchestra (which Maestro
Morgan also directs) for a big, extravagant performance of this stirring
orchestral tribute to Russia's victory over Napoleon.
The final offering
is a concerto featuring the winner of our 12th annual Young Artist Competition
(held in June 2008).
