Our February concert is really going to
be out of this world! Internationally renowned jazz violinist (and MacArthur
genius grant recipient) Regina Carter will be featured in the new
Violin Concerto written expressly for her by Grammy Award-winning composer and
jazz pianist Billy Childs. A talented pianist from a very early age, Childs has
grown into a sophisticated composer praised for brilliantly blending jazz and
classical elements. Carter, known for her passionate playing and seemingly
boundless energy, consistently brings audiences to their feet, whether on tour
in Europe or in her hometown of Detroit, where this Violin Concerto received
its successful world premiere earlier this year.
 Assistant Conductor Bryan
Nies, praised by critics for his marvelously evocative readings and
superb musical direction, will lead the orchestra in The Planets,
Gustav Holsts imaginative interpretation of how the planets influences
human emotions and ideas.
(Suitable for children 8 and over.)
