  The
spotlight is on powerful women at our January concert. The concert opens with
the overture to Beethovens only opera, Fidelio, in which the
heroine, Leonore, courageously rescues her unjustly imprisoned husband. The
woman that inspired Berliozs revolutionary masterpiece Symphonie
Fantastique was the Irish actress Harriet Smithson. The entire symphony is
an impassioned expression of his unrequited love for her, with the different
movements portraying the opium-induced visions of a lovesick young artist in
the depths of despair.
On
the second half of the program, were thrilled to present world-class
soprano Angela Brown performing A Womans Life, a song cycle
written for her by composer Richard Danielpour in collaboration with esteemed
poet Maya Angelou. Danielpour first connected with Brown in 2005, when she
replaced the legendary Jessye Norman in the world premiere of his opera
Margaret Garner to great acclaim. Impressed with the strength of her
performance, he decided to write a song cycle for her. The Maya Angelou poems
on which the song cycle is based trace the arc of a womans life from
childhood to old age.
(Suitable for children 10 and over.)
