For our second
offering in the American Masterworks Series, we'll present a concert hall
staging of Follies, by legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim (whose
other stage classics include Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum).
Set in a theatre scheduled
for demolition during a reunion of the fictional musical revue, the Weismann
Follies, Sondheim's musical captures the memories and heartaches of a
bygone era. Much of the drama centers around the relationships of two married
couples attending the reunion, both of whom are wondering about the choices
they've made and the courses their lives have taken. The other long-retired
showgirls also relive their careers through songs from the old Follies,
sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves.
Local
favorite Frederica von Stade will make a special appearance to sing the
show-stopping number I'm Still Here. Our concert version will include
all of the popular songs, including Broadway Baby, Losing My Mind and
Could I Leave You?
