  The votes are
in! Join us as we kick off our season with an exciting all-American program
that celebrates democracy in action and the conclusion of the 2012 Presidential
election. Well open the concert with an exuberant fanfare by
African-American composer Adolphus Hailstork and an orchestrated version of one
of Bay Area composer Gordon Gettys earliest piano pieces.
OEBSs new principal clarinetist Bill Kalinkos will be the soloist
for Aaron Coplands Clarinet Concerto, a work commissioned by jazz
clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman. Kalinkos, who has a national
reputation as a contemporary music specialist, has premiered pieces by some of
todays foremost composers.
In recognition of preeminent local
composer and UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus Olly Wilsons 75th birthday,
well play his Episodes for Orchestra, a work the Detroit
News described as a beguiling world-class delight
thoroughly
engaging. Bernsteins lively Symphonic Dances from West Side
Story will send you out of the hall snapping your fingers.
(Suitable for children 10 and over.)
