| Monica Barker, Flute The 2005-2006 season marks the introduction of our new Principal Flutist, Monica Daniel. Monica comes to us with a wealth of experience playing in orchestras in Tulsa, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Phoenix as well as other orchestras in the United States. She has come to international acclaim being a prizewinner in various national and international competitions, including the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, and the Concorso Internazionale di Flauto "Domenico Cimarosa", and competing in the prestigious Kobe Competition in Kobe, Japan earlier this year. Monica began playing the piano at a very young age, and started playing the flute in the 5th grade. She settled on playing the flute professionally after her first experience in the Tacoma Youth Symphony as a junior in high school. Her senior year, she was a member of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. She then went to The Cleveland Institute of Music, earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees while studying with Joshua Smith. Monica is also currently the Principal Flutist of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, and in the summer, can be heard with the Colorado Music Festival orchestra located in Boulder, Colorado. |
