Count Wilhelm Wachtmeister

Count Wilhelm Wachtmeister is a Swedish Diplomatist who was personal assistant to Dag Hammarskjold, the 2nd UN secretary general, 1958 to 1961. His was scheduled to be on the plane which crashed in the Congo in 1961, when Hammarskjold was killed. His amazing career as a diplomat spans over more than four decades of service in Vienna,, Madrid, Lisbon, Moscow, and Algeria. For ten years he worked either at United Nations or in the division for UN affairs of the Swedish Foreign Office. He was the Swedish ambassador to Washington for 15 years, 1974 to 1989. With the longest service among the ambassadors he had the highest rank and served as the Dean of the Diplomatic corps in Washington 1986-1989 and was for some time a tennis partner with President George Bush. His memoirs Som jag sag det ("As I saw it") was published in 1996. He is married to Ulla Wachtmeister, an artist, and has one son and two daughters, one of whom lives in the Bay Area.
